What is the Fodder Scam?



It is What started off as a small-time false expenses embezzlement in government offices,grew to a grand theft over many years where corruption was facilitated over fictitious drugs and fodder for cattle.Close to 950 crores was embezzeled from the government treasure in bihar.The main accused were cheif ministers of bihar,Laloo Prasad Yadav and Jagannath Mishra.The first case was registered in 1996 following a public intrest litigation filed by former deput cheif minister of Bihar, Sushil Kumar Modi.
It appears that many letters were sent by the deputy accountant general prior to that,which raised concerns about the irregularities in the accountsof transportation and procurement processes in the animal husbandry department .The patna high court then ordered a CBI enquiry in 1996....

RECENT UPDATES:

Additional cases were filed over the three years with more evidence uncovered , which was added to Laloo's chargesheet.A disproportionate assests case were also filed aganist him and hs wife.Rabri Devi in 1998- he had ammased 4.6 million.But they was acquitted in 2006 by a speacial CBI court.
Trails in 45 cases have been completed so far,out of 53.These trails began in 2002.while these scams did end for Laloo Prasad Yadav's resign as CM,he has now been convicted along whit Mishra and 45 other accused who have been found guilty.The RJD-supremo plans to appeal aganist the conviction.


IMPLICANCE AND SIGNIFICANCE:
The fodder scam became as a symbol of corruption in bureaucracy and brought to light the criminalisation of politics in Bihar.Yadav stands disqualified and cannot vote or contest in elections according to the supreme court order in July.In,Recent times, an ordinance was passed by the ruling party that nullified the supreme court verdict on disqualification of convicted politicians.....
