Book Review: Ubuntu Made Easy: A Project-Based Introduction to Linux

Ubuntu is one of the popular Linux distribution. It is free and available as open source but it is not user friendly as Windows. Users often attempt to master the features on their own with online resources and articles. However, beginners will find it difficult to learn Ubuntu without a reference material.

Ubuntu Made Easy provides comprehensive coverage of various aspects involved with the operating system. The book is divided into 22 chapters. Chapter 1 welcomes you to the world of Linux. Chapter 2 helps you to learn the installation process of Ubunt
u.

Chapters 3, 4 and 5 examines Linux desktop, Internet connection and Internet related aspects. You will learn how to download, install and update programs in chapter 6. Chapter 7 and 8 examines file, disc handling and command line. You will learn the usage of various commands.

While chapter 19 examines the procedure of running Windows under Ubuntu including that of dual boot option, Chapter 20 provides a comprehensive coverage of security related aspects with special reference to file encryption and document shredding.

Bugs occur with any operating system. There should be a mechanism to submit the errors and bugs you encounter as a result of day to day usage. Chapter 21 examines the usage of Ubuntu forums and IRC through which you can submit bug reports including the procedure for ordering stickers and other goodies.

Chapter 22 enables users to fix common error messages which occur during the usage of Ubuntu. The book includes 4 appendix which examines the installation of Ubuntu from a USB flash disk, creation of 64 bit disc and other online resources. The authors also examine the steps needed to manually partition the hard disk.

The author has examined the concepts with the help of comprehensive explanation, projects, step-by-step instructions and screenshots.

I noticed that author has provided lengthy explanation to few projects. I feel that readers might not read lengthy explanations and should be reduced by giving njotes and hints at appropriate places. The book also includes a CD which I hope will be useful for learners.

Ubuntu Made Easy will be very useful for those who wish to test drive and work with the operating system.
